Summary/Abstract: This article explores the complex relationship between Emperor Constantine the Great and Athanasius of Alexandria as a paradigm of the enduring tension between political authority and ecclesial truth in the fourth century. Moving beyond a biographical or merely historical reading, the study examines how both figures acted iuxta propria principia - according to their own principles - revealing two distinct but intersecting logics of unity: that of imperial cohesion and that of theological fidelity. Constantine sought to secure the unity of the Empire through religious concord, whereas Athanasius defended the unity of the Church through the uncompromising confession of Nicene orthodoxy. Their encounter, culminating in the conflicts surrounding the Council of Tyre (335) and the subsequent exiles of Athanasius, illustrates how theological and political reasons could collide within the newly „Christianized” Empire. The article argues that the dynamic between ratio imperii and fides ecclesiae not only shaped Byzantine notions of „symphony” between Church and State but continues to illuminate contemporary discussions on the Church’s prophetic witness within political modernity. The tension between truth and power, visible in the fourth century, remains a living question for the Church’s self-understanding in every age.
