Summary/Abstract: Worldwide, domestic violence is one of the most common causes of hospitalisation for women. In addition, regularly experiencing violence from a partner or husband worsens women’s mental health, also prompting them to carry out intentional self-harm. This article presents the findings of five research studies confirming the link between women’s self-harm and domestic violence. The studies were conducted in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Sri Lanka. All of them involved women in adolescence or adulthood who were in a heterosexual relationship and had experienced at least one type of violence (physical, psychological, or sexual). It has been shown that the number of violent behaviours experienced by a partner or husband promotes a higher frequency of self-harm in the adult female population. In addition, an analysis of selected studies has shown that in the Western culture, the most common form of female self-harm is skin slashing, while in the Asian culture it occurs less frequently, as other dangerous behaviours – such as poisoning oneself with pesticides – replace typical forms of self-harm.
