Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the mediating mechanism in the relationship between conscientiousness and anxiety. The mediator in the tested model was self-concept clarity, defined as the extent to which self-beliefs are clearly and confidently defined, internally consistent, and stable. The Polish IPIP-BFM-50 questionnaire, the Polish Trait Anxiety-Scale, and the Polish adaptation of the Self-ConceptClarity Scale were all used to measure the variables. The theoretical framework is based on the entropy model of uncertainty (EMU), which posits that uncertainty management is crucial to personal stability and integrity, also at the identity level. In total, 360 people participated in the study, among whom 250 (70%) were women (age range: 18–81; M = 36,0; SD = 15,31). The results showed that self-concept clarity was a full mediator in the relationship between conscientiousness and anxiety, thus confirming the hypothesis. This study offers novel insights into understanding the link between conscientiousness and anxiety. The EMU helps to situate self-concept clarity within a broader conceptual context by placing it in the framework of psychological entropy. Furthermore, implications for clinical theory and practice are discussed.
