70 YEARS OF CONSERVATION ACTIVITY IN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY “ST. ST. CYRIL AND METHOD”

Summary/Abstract: The Conservation Center of the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” is the oldest and largest laboratory specializing in the conservation and restoration of paper-based objects. It was founded in February 1956. The first years were characterized by rapid progress, including the introduction and invention of new technologies. One such example is the leaf-casting machine, which today is an indispensable part of every conservation laboratory for paper objects throughout the world. Over time, the center has established itself as a leading methodological, consulting and scientific center in the field of preservation and conservation of literary and documentary heritage. Over 70 years, the center has ocnserved over 1,700,000 sheets. Among them are some of the most valuable monuments from both the collections of the National Library and the collections of libraries, museums, institutions and private individuals from all over the country.
