Pericopes in Rej's Postil. A Contribution to the Study of the Sources of the Translation (Based on Pericopes from the Gospel of Matthew)

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the Gospel pericopes included in Postylla by Mikołaj Rej, focusing on those derived from the Gospel of Matthew. The aim of the study is to contribute to research on the sources of Rej's biblical translation through a comparison of selected pericopes with their Latin counterparts. Particular attention is given to the relationship between Rej's text, the Vulgate, and Erasmus of Rotterdam's Latin translation of the New Testament. Earlier scholarship suggested that Rej relied primarily on Erasmus's version while occasionally referring to the Vulgate. An analysis of the pericopes from the first (1557) and second (1560) editions of the Postylla indicates, however, that elements associated with Erasmus's translation appear only in the later edition, which calls for a reconsideration of the role attributed to Erasmus in shaping Rej's text.
