“Other Ways of Life”. Marta Petrusewicz and Writing the History of the Peripheries

Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to reconstruct the research programme of Professor Marta Petrusewicz. Through her study on the latifundium system in southern Italy she challenged dominant views of the South as a supposedly backward and irrational socioeconomic order, demonstrating instead that it gave rise to an alternative vision of a harmonious, non-capitalist form of modernization. From this perspective, she identified the mechanisms behind the emergence of the “Southern Question” – a specific way of framing the South as a “problem” – and subsequently used her findings to develop an original method of a comparative history of the peripheries.
