Summary/Abstract: The author outlines an image of conditions cohesive with the principle of the Borderland Foundation promotion of social tolerance and multi-culture upon the basis of a strategy of group involvement and cultural activity that produced Neighbors, a book by Jan Tomasz Gross, linking a local and national perspective. The events in Jedwabne, a village in north-eastern Poland – similar to Sejny but with a totally different history – define the area of joint identity, stressing the threats lurking in rampant hostility against an ethnic and national background.
