Summary/Abstract: Public protests today appear globally not only as legitimate forms of non-institutional civic engagement aimed at addressing contingent problems, but also as indicators of a deeper crisis of democratic processes. This paper examines the student and civic protests that emerged in Serbia following the collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad in 2024 within the broader framework of the crisis of liberal democracy, rather than treating them as a locally circumscribed political phenomenon. The paper identifies several key indicators of this crisis and, drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives of authors whose heterogeneous critiques can be heuristically situated along a spectrum ranging from reformist to radical approaches (Habermas, Crouch, Van Reybrouck, Wright, Wolin, Graeber, Bookchin), it maps and analyzes the strategic objectives and organizational forms of the contemporary student–civic protests in Serbia, including assemblies, plenums, blockades, and marches.
