Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the relationship between radical democracy and student-citizen protest in Serbia. The public square (agora) and the capital-parliamentarism are synonyms of direct and indirect democracy. The public square is the general will. It is not post-democracy but “wild democracy” spontaneous and public, not lobbied behind the scenes of parliamentary factions. The tolerance of the public square is not an act of mercy of the state but a constitutional requirement. The uprising of the countless in the public square is the hidden, unrecognized plebeian component of direct democracy in the Serbian protest. But there is no radical democracy in it that seeks deeper changes in the world of work. It is not there because the protest divides the economic problem, does not challenge the whole, but narrows the criticism of the system to corruption. That’s why the square and the capital-parliamentarianism are conflicting complementary parts of one whole, Serbian capitalism. Although quite entwined, this duality is One. These are different but essentially related, opposite, but not sufficiently antagonized components of the whole, from whose tensions nothing new can arise. The result can only be an improvement of the existing, only a better capitalism. These are the limits that the protest cannot exceed because they are imposed by power relations and the hegemon’s epoch-making awareness of the narrow and wider environment.
