Summary/Abstract: The newly established African states, formed as a result of decolonization, initially sought to unite within economic organizations. On 25 May 1963, during a conference held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was founded, bringing together the majority of African countries. In 2000, this organization was transformed into the African Union (AU). The purpose of this article is to present the development of the African system for the protection of human rights. The key research problems can be summarized in the following questions: How did the process of state integration on the African continent unfold? Which document established the framework for human rights protection within the OAU/AU? What were the objectives and functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights? What were the objectives and functions of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights? What is understood by the concept of discrimination against women in the African system? The principal research methods are institutional-legal analysis and the historical method.
