Summary/Abstract: The Russian invasion of Ukraine, within the context of a shifting security architecture in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, significantly exacerbated the Australia-China crisis. The gradual process of rebuilding relations, previously strained by trade and diplomatic tensions, was halted as both countries found themselves on opposing sides of the conflict. Australia, committed to preserving the rules-based international order under U.S. leadership, was thus confronted with the revisionist ambitions of China and Russia. This article examines Australia's perception of the strategic opportunities and threats arising from the war in Ukraine, particularly in light of China's stance and actions on the international stage. It further analyzes how Russian aggression has impacted the scope and orientation of both Australia's and the People's Republic of China's strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. Research findings indicate that a return to the status quo characterizing Australia-China relations in the first decades of the 21st century is unlikely. In their pursuit of a mutually vital trade partnership, Australia and China have had to adjust their policies and approaches to regional cooperation. Amidst profound transformations in the international environment, the stabilization of their bilateral relations remains crucial for achieving a lasting balance between a middle and a great power.
