Summary/Abstract: The operation of prisons, a complex and multifaceted institution in itself, is one element of the state's criminal policy. Their mission is, on the one hand, to socially isolate individuals sentenced to imprisonment by a final judgment, and on the other, to resocialize them. Changing views on the purpose and function of imprisonment are closely linked to the development of the prison system. Initially, the purpose of punishment was solely retaliation, thus serving a purely repressive function. It was only the emergence of the penitentiary system, understood as a uniform, legally regulated, planned method of executing imprisonment across large areas, that had a significant impact on the development of prison systems and penitentiary policy.
