Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the author's conclusions regarding the system of the French Fifth Republic to the readers. The author considers this political system to be a synthesis of the tradition of a strong state with a strong position of the head of state developed by an absolute monarchy, with the ideas of freedom, equality and fraternity derived from the political tradition of the Republic. The author, standing on the side of the democratic rule of law, cannot but criticize the system of the Third and Fourth French Republics for not fulfilling the promises of democracy. The material on which the author's conclusions are based are books describing the course of French history, both its political and economic history. The author does not defend the ancient regime, but notes that the old system also made a positive contribution to the development of the theory of the state as a guarantor of peace in society.
