Summary/Abstract: The county board is an executive body functioning in the structure of the three-tier division of local government units. It is therefore necessary for this body to operate in accordance with the law and with the correct composition of its members. The purpose of this article is to present the position and function of the deputy mayor in the district. The first part discusses general issues related to the appointment of the county board and issues related to the removal of the deputy mayor and other members of the board. The next part discusses the position and functions of the deputy mayor as a named member of this board. The article takes into account the organizational charts and statutes of several counties in Poland, in order to show how differently the position of this board member can be shaped. In connection with the possibility of removing the deputy mayor and failing to appoint a new one in his place, an issue arises to be resolved, which is the legality of the operation of the county board without a deputy mayor. After analyzing the views of the doctrine and the jurisprudence of the courts, several de lege ferenda conclusions can be reached on the position and function of the deputy mayor. Among the conclusions are: the removal of the deputy mayor as an obligatory member of the county board, the granting of statutory powers to the deputy mayor in the law, and the introduction of the legal consequences of not appointing a deputy mayor after the dismissal of the previous one.
