Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author examines the publishing activities of John L. Stoddard, one of the most popular travel literature authors at the turn of the twentieth century. In doing so she takes a closer look at Glimpses of the World (1892), a book that combines the characteristics of a luxury photographic album, an atlas of views, and a travel guide. The author also demonstrates that the success of this and other Stoddard publications was due to a marketing strategy based on the concept of the celebrity traveller, making use of tried-and-tested models of illustrated publications popularized in the nineteenth century. Fedorowicz-Jackowska reveals that such books were produced at a time of intense development in image reproduction techniques, at the dawn of cinema, and in an era of mass-circulated photography, and that they responded to a growing demand for publications that combined educational and decorative functions.
