Summary/Abstract: Self-transcendence is a fundamental human aspiration, yet its manifestation in Orthodox hesychastic spirituality from a psychological perspective remains underexplored. This study investigates whether hesychasm functions as a theologically grounded and psychologically effective strategy for existential meaning making through radical self transformation. Analyzing self-transformation via a threefold framework of calling, transition, and perfection, this paper focuses on the final stage of spiritual perfection. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation with four hermitic Athonite monks, including a 92-year-old elder with over 70 years of monastic experience. Thematic phenomenological analysis reveals that perfection involves cultivated virtues of unconditional love and radical humility, expressed in the mindset "I am worse than anyone". Additionally, monks reported extraordinary cognitive capacities such as kardiognosis (knowledge of the heart) and synergetic perception, which are understood as natural outcomes of deep self-transcendence rather than paranormality. The findings parallel psychological constructs of the hypo egoic state and self transcendence as defined by Maslow, Frankl, and Yaden. Given the empirical-phenomenological contribution, it fills a gap in both the psychology of religion and Orthodox theological studies.
