The system of protection of cultural assets in Germany with emphasis on fire protection

Summary/Abstract: Germany does not have a uniform system for protecting cultural assets through specific fire protection regulations. Neither the Federal Law for the Protection of Cultural Assets nor the Laws for the Protection of Historic Monuments and the Building Act in the individual federal explicitly mandate fire protection measures solely due to the fire risk associated with cultural assets. In practice, any such measures are typically determined through expert assessments of historic buildings and mainly consist of interpretation of the laws and compromises between the responsible services and the owners and users of these properties.
