Pope John Paul II in the Thought of Smiljana Rendić, a Leading Figure of Croatian Catholic Journalism

Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the contribution of the first Croatian Catholic female journalist, Smiljana Rendić, to promoting the thoughts and messages of Pope John Paul II in the Croatian Catholic press and her manuscript legacy. It contextualizes events in the Vatican and the Pope's travels and addresses to the faithful. It pays special attention to the Pope's encounters with marginalized social groups, the little ones, children, the unprotected, the sick, and the bereaved. The paper examines the chronicles of S. Rendić and her analyses of the Pope's actions and reflections, highlighting the Pope's prophetic messages. It sheds light on S. Rendić’s exceptional sensitivity to the novelty that comes through non-violent means, as she herself was a victim of communist persecution on several occasions. The author uses the hermeneutic method of reading texts in their context.
