Summary/Abstract: Multilingualism is one of the fundamental principles of the European Union, protected by relevant legislation. Research on multilingualism is necessarily interdisciplinary. Language is a means of communication and an expression of identity, values , and power, and language issues often become ethical issues when language is the basis for making decisions on the realization of language rights, the right to language, equality in access to public institutions, freedom of choice of profession, inclusion, and human rights. The paper addresses the topic through the prism of the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU). The theoretical framework of the paper addresses the issues of linguistic diversity, the phenomenon of multilingualism, language policy, and planning. The empirical part of the paper employs discourse analysis to examine selected judgments from the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU related to the realization of language rights and linguistic justice/equity from a sociolinguistic perspective.
