Summary/Abstract: The perception of time in everyday language may reflect culturally determined meanings. A particularly relevant issue concerns the functioning of time units - such as seconds, hours, days, weeks, months, and years - in everyday speech. This article examines how individuals under the age of 30 and over the age of 60 conceptualize and verbalize subjective experiences of time. The analysis is based on selected statements and on descriptions of the concept of time as categorized by younger and older participants. A secondary objective is to identify similarities and differences in these accounts in order to determine whether, and to what extent, the two age groups share common semantic elements or differ in their perception of time. The findings indicate that biological age influences the perception of particular temporal units. However, whether a given unit is experienced as lengthening or shortening depends on contextual factors and on the spheres of everyday life in which individuals function.
