Summary/Abstract: The author emphasizes the role of analogy in speech development, drawing on fi ndings and theoretical models described in the literature on the functioning of linguistic and logical knowledge in the human mind. The overview presented in the paper demonstrates that analogy is not determined solely by the structure and functioning of the brain. Rather, the capacity for analogical reasoning develops in tandem with cognitive and linguistic growth, and is also shaped by environmental infl uences. Referring to the results of her own studies, the author highlights the role of proportional analogy in the formation of knowledge about relations between words and word forms, achieved through the establishing and maintaining their formal and semantic correspondences.
