Teaching Greek and Latin until the Renaissance: Lecture notes

Summary/Abstract: The manuscript presented is a lecture given on November 12th, 2025 during the meeting organized by the Polish Rhetoric Society. It served as an introduction and input for the students preparing for their Oxford debate entitled "The knowledge of Latin should be a necessary part of academic education in the humanities." The lecture presents the history of teaching Latin from the Antiquity up to the Renaissance. The reader will find information on both the methods used at each stage of education and the most important authors drawn from Roman citizens' education. The lecture is aimed at to everyone interested in the history of education and at those who study or want to start learning classical languages.
