Summary/Abstract: The essay analyses and compares the so-called city symphonies Berlin, die Sinfonie der Großstadt (D 1927, dir. Walt(h)er Ruttmann), Stramilano (I 1929, dir. Corrado DʼErrico) and Zagreb u svjetlu velegrada (Zagreb in the Light of the Big City, YU 1934, dir. Oktavian Miletić). The beginning of the essay and the theoretical core are the reflections of the sociologist Georg Simmel on The Metropolis and Mental Life (1905). The aim of the essay is to examine whether and how the films mentioned correspond with the theoretical text and with each other, to prove that at the beginning of the 20th century in Europe there was a certain cinematic metropolitan narrative from the circle of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), which was characteristic of both the European centres and the fringes of Europe. At the same time, the topic represents an early example of German, Italian and Croatian film relations.
