Summary/Abstract: For Juan Ramón Jiménez, San Juan de la Cruz was a great inspiration. The poet from Moguer perceived him as the "first symbolist." The objective of the paper will be to describe the relationship between the poetics of San Juan de la Cruz and that of Juan Ramón Jiménez in terms of the functioning of the symbol. As for Juan Ramón Jiménez, the material for my research will be the poetic volume La soledad sonora (1908) and if it is about San Juan de la Cruz I will refer to his three mystical poems: Cántico espiritual, Noche oscura del alma and Llama de amor viva.
