Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to address one of the, in my opinion, central weaknesses of contemporary Islamic thought – the separation of an ancient text, in this case the Qur’an, from its original context in order to make it speak about everything possible. The origins of this effort, whose most pronounced forms we encounter in modern times, can be traced back to the early periods of Islamic intellectual history. This way of approaching the Qur’an rests on the assumption that it – as the word of God – is not limited to the time of Revelation, but has a lasting value. This notion opens up the possibility of definitively post-Qur’anic events, opinions or attitudes being legitimized or rejected, as necessary, by the authority of the Qur’an. The general belief among Muslims about the superhistoricity of the Qur’anic expression is a fundamental argument that gives legitimacy to such exegetical efforts in the eyes of believers. What was once supposed to be achieved by invented hadiths, attributed to the Prophet, as well as different - also invented - variants of reading the Qur’an, today, when these possibilities have been exhausted, it is tried to be achieved by adding modern meanings to the ancient Qur’anic expression. In the following, I will try to present analytically the possible historical backgrounds of this anachronistic approach to the Qur’an and point out certain discontinuities of reception throughout history at the level of thought and perception, that could have led to it.
