Summary/Abstract: The article examines the critique of scientific-technological development presented by three important figures of the Argentine essay: Ezequiel Martínez Estrada, Ernesto Sabato and Christian Ferrer. The article begins by noting that Hispanic-American cultural pessimism in general, and Argentine cultural pessimism in particular -- i.e., one focused on scientific-technological advances as almost primordial causes of dehumanization or spiritual degradation -- is not a new phenomenon. One could argue that such criticism is part of a deeper or more radical malaise, which is quite widespread due to the (self-)destructive character of human freedom in late modernity.
