The monstruos in the literary discourse: the ”vampire” of Ropraz

Summary/Abstract: The example of Jacques Chessex (Le Vampire de Ropraz) relates not only to ethical challenges of representing monstruosity, but to the dynamics of generic and discursive particularities that govern fables of events in connection with the emergence of monstuosity in a specific community. The enunciative and generic approach that we will adopt in this contribution supports the idea that the notion of monstrous is not linked to any specific genre, on the contrary, we are witnessing a mix of fictional and factual genres which alternate various discursive modalities susceptible to ensure the narratibility of dismal stories anchored in collective memory. We assume that the study of the literary staging of monstruosity is conducive to sociolectures which also make it possible to understand the author’s and readers’s posture: the author’s existential relationship with his text and the readers’s look on fictional and factuel forms of monstruosity.
