Summary/Abstract: Between 1915 and 1918, the Jasna Góra monastery was under Austro-Hungarian occupation. Its commander, Captain Josef Klettlinger, supervised the monastery, ensured order was maintained on its premises, and assisted the monks in obtaining food and fuel. He also acted as an intermediary between the monks and the German occupation authorities in Częstochowa. He sought to present himself to Polish society as a representative of a state favourable both to Poles and to Catholicism.
