Summary/Abstract: In this article, we combine the concept of strategic narratives, discourse analysis, and semiotic approach to understand the Kremlin’s justifications about the illegal seizing of Ukraine. An analysis of the posts made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on their official English-language Twitter account during the first year of the war helps to explain the complexities of legitimising military aggression on social media (e.g. combining rhetorical references to authority, moral values, and fear) that concurrently serve several strategic purposes.
