Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the issues related with religious convictions in the Estonian Defence Forces on the period between the two world wars. The main focus is on the practical application of the principles of religious freedom and the order for satisfying the spiritual needs of servicemen, including issues related with the establishment and abolition of paid chaplaincy in the Defence Forces. Among other things, this article provides an overview of the debates held by religious institutions, the Defence Forces and the government about whether the Defence Forces need clergymen and what should be their rights and obligations, thus providing historical comparison for the debates held in recent years about the need for military chaplaincy
