Summary/Abstract: This article examines Turkish loanwords in Bulgarian dialects as a primary dataset for areal/contact linguistics and historical phonology. Drawing on approximately 300 dialectological sources, it models dialectal variation and identifies systematic phonetic and prosodic patterns: reflexes of – ɣ –, – ɣ (retained consonant vs. quantitative lengthening of the preceding vowel), multiple outcomes of ü/ö (including mutual substitution, back-vowel realisations with palatalised preceding consonants, and front unrounded reflexes), syllable-specific (partial) velarisation, and stress doublets. The analysis emphasises the significance of indirect borrowing via other Balkan languages and distinguishes between Rumelian and Anatolian donor strata. It also addresses source-related limitations, including the underreporting of “foreign” items in certain dictionaries. The study advocates the compilation of a pan-Balkan comparative dictionary with fine-grained areal and chronological annotation and outlines future directions, including the mapping of isophones and isoglosses, acoustic verification, and targeted fieldwork. Overall, dialectal variability in Turkish loanwords emerges as a key indicator of diffusion pathways and of internal dialect stratification within Turkish.
