Iste lupus nostras diripiebat oves: High Political Emotions in a Poem from 1810

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the use of flattery and emotional appeal in Elegia ad inclytos status (1810), a poem by Vasile Popp written on the occasion of the meeting of the Transylvanian Diet. Using classical elegiac couplets, the poem references both classical and local legendary figures with the goal of flattering the political elites. Meanwhile, emotional appeals to love, honor, and fear are understood as factors that can also motivate the representatives of the estates. The present study highlights this rhetorical discourse and draws attention to an insufficiently studied author and literary phenomenon.
