Summary/Abstract: This article, based on new documentary sources, analyzes the circumstances of the release on 1 May 1917, from house arrest in Iași, of the socialist leader Dr. Cr. Rakowsky. Attention is drawn to the intercession of some law enforcement officials in Russia, after the February Revolution, with the Romanian Government to free Rakowsky. Freed by Russian soldiers and fleeing by train to Odessa, Rakowsky headed for Petrograd, in order to serve the forces that sought to bring the “revolution” to Romania. The events in Iaºi of that day outlined the portrait of a militant driven by strong resentments against the Romanian ruling class and by the ideas of the international revolutionary movement.
