Summary/Abstract: One can formally and semantically describe Joanna Oparek’s book Małe powinności (SmallObligations) as a haptic literary work. Oparek utilizes various strategies and languagesto illustrate the multisensory experience of violence. The affective influence of thiswork aims to achieve long-term effects: arouse emotions that return, engage, hurt, andsimultaneously situate recipients in the presence process. In this act of reading, theboundary between the literary and material dimensions of reality blurs, emphasizing boththe seriousness of the subject and an entry into a community of experience. The hapticquality of a literary work cannot exist without its affective dimension, albeit its linguisticdimension proves equally important. The overlapping languages of expression and mediaprovide Oparek’s volume with texture that allows for its material clash with reality.
