Summary/Abstract: The article examines the similarities and differences in the development of the gram-matical category of gender in the languages at the core of the Balkan Sprachbund – Bulgarian, Albanian, Romanian, and Greek. In addition, parallels are drawn with other Slavic and Romance languages. The question of potential Turkic influence on the Balkan languages is particularly relevant when considering the historical and contemporary status of grammatical gender.
