Summary/Abstract: The article examines a persistent word order pattern in Bulgarian, from classical tenth-century Old Bulgarian through Early Modern Bulgarian to the present day. It is characterised by discontinuity between the subject and the predicate due to the insertion of adjuncts. By analysing the attested occurrences in the text of the Bible in Greek, as well as in contemporary Ukrainian, Polish, and Czech, we find that the studied word order pattern is typical of these languages as well. On the basis of these observations, we make conclusions about the possible universality of this word order model.
