Summary/Abstract: The article examines the characteristics of the surnames of Slovaks living in the Slovak linguistic enclave of Pilisszentkereszt (Slovak: Mlynky) in Pest County in northwestern Hungary, with a focus on interlingual contact phenomena. After the defeat of the Ottoman Turks and their withdrawal from the Kingdom of Hungary, the village was resettled not only by Slovaks – primarily from the western regions of Slovakia – but also by Czechs and Germans, which influenced the form of the inhabitants’ surnames. The surnames of families with Slovak roots were strongly influenced by Magyarisation and by natural assimilation with the incoming Hungarian population, and to some extent also by Serbian colonisation in the surrounding villages.
