Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to present the evolution of research on media systems from the first work showing this issue in a comprehensive manner (“Four Theories of the Press”), after the last analysis (the latest from 2022). It can be seen that research on political aspects affecting the media and quantitative research dominate. It is essential to pay attention to new phenomena and processes shaping modern media systems, resulting from the impact of a given country’s political system and other external factors. Currently, such a challenge is to study the subject, considering categories and indicators using the presence of fake news, disinformation policy, and information war. Consequently, comprehensive research on media systems is becoming increasingly difficult and complex. However, considering such variables is important because they affect the media system.
