Summary/Abstract: Henri Buvelot, a Swiss native from Nyon, the canton of Vaud, is sporadically mentioned in various documents from 1838–1846 in Wallachia, where he served as a French-language teacher at the St. Sava school in Bucharest. Together with his wife, he established a girls’ boarding school there. He is also known as the author of a historical novel and, most notably, for his plan to bring Swiss settlers in Wallachia—arguably the most comprehensive and detailed document of this kind in the Romanian Principalities in the first half of the 19th century. Drawing on Swiss archival records, the first part of this study attempts to reconstruct the little-known biography of this individual and his family. The second part analyzes the bilingual version (in French and Romanian) of the colonization project from 1838, along with its continuation from 1841. All three documents are published in full for the first time in the appendices, together with another unpublished administrative document authored by the same individual.
