Summary/Abstract: Although the 16th Summer Olympics held in Melbourne in 1956 were known in Olympic jargon as the „Friendly Games“, the Cold War constellations and crises that marked the Olympic year had a drastic impact on the Olympics and symbolically nullified the best-intentioned Australian slogan. This paper analyzes the correlation of the turbulent events that preceded the Games, the Hungarian Revolution, the Suez Crisis, and the dispute between China and Taiwan, in the sense that they produced a wave of politically motivated boycotts and dramatically opened the door to political interference in sports on a previously unseen level. By analyzing the phenomenon of boycotts, the use of soft power, the famous violent water polo match between the Soviet Union and Hungary, and the consequences of the mass exodus of Hungarian athletes to the West, the paper shows how the Olympic Games became an arena of proxy warfare between rival ideological concepts.
