Summary/Abstract: Speed and conciseness have become some of the fundamental principles of modern journalism, which can easily lead to crossing boundaries of respecting professional and ethical standards. Media ethics, therefore, prove to be a more important aspect than ever in the history of journalism. In addition to international documents, laws, and national journalistic codes, many global media outlets have long established internal codes or editorial guidelines, which are supplemented and refined based on practical experiences to clarify rules in relation to generally applicable documents. These codes or editorial guidelines (depending on how they are named in different media outlets) are usually signed by journalists upon employment. Leading media theorists and researchers believe that they are more effective in enhancing media professionalism, as they include specific sanctions for non-compliance. This study, however, shows that a large number of media outlets in Serbia do not have their own editorial guidelines; those that do generally do not make them publicly available, and they regulate various aspects of journalistic practice.
