Summary/Abstract: Some of the most important sources of American power in the “Long American Century” were the Universities in at least two ways: first, as a source of Hard Power, because the knowledge enabled the overall economic, technological and social progress of this country, and second, as a source of Soft Power, because the Universities attracted talented students from foreign countries, and some of them, almost as a rule – the best ones stayed in America, spending their working and living lives there. Although it was already clear during the first administration of the President Donald Trump (2017–2021) that the Universities were the subject of his harsh criticism, during the second administration of Trump these criticisms turned into a kind of ”open War”. Regarding them as sources of ideology that harms American national interests at home and abroad, this became particularly visible in the abolition of federal funds and the tightening policy of issuing visas to current and potential foreign students. All this put together will result in a reduction of both American Hard and soft Power and a worsening of America’s position in the “Age of Great Power Competition”.
