Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on an analysis of Твой шанс (Engl. Your Chance) and Я люблю русский язык (Engl. I love Russian) Russian textbooks that are used in language education at the University of Defence. It evaluates the textbooks in five criteria by means of a contextual and structural analysis: 1. structure 2. thematic relevance 3. clarity 4. intercultural context and 5. graphic apparatus. The results indicate that both textbooks offer a systematic arrangement of the curriculum and thematic diversity corresponding to the requirements of language education in the environment of the University of Defence, but they differ in the level of interpretation accessibility and the scope of intercultural elements. The study also contains a student survey, which reveals the individual elements of the textbooks and their impacts on the students' motivation to learn. The findings point at the significance of the textbooks' visual features and the need of a balanced interconnection of linguistic, cultural and didactic elements for an effective development of language competences. The study therefore contributes to a reflection on the quality of Russian textbooks within university education and offers incentives for their innovation and further use in practice.
