Summary/Abstract: The events that happened on June 13, 1916 in Galați represent one of the earliest violent confrontations between the Romanian working class and the representatives of the Capitalist regime. The tragic outcome of this clash was the death of nine workers and the injury of several dozen others. The events were used by the subsequent political propaganda, first by the Socialists in the interwar period, then by the Communist regime. The propaganda turned this moment into a symbol of the class struggle, promoting a Manichaean narrative: the workers as heroes, the bourgeoisie as oppressors. The liberal government tried to minimize its responsibility for this tragedy, and the communist historiography imposed a unique and ideological interpretation of the events. An objective reassessment, based on various sources, is necessary for the correct understanding of the facts. Beyond the political symbolism, the events reflect the social tensions, the economic crisis, the governmental authoritarianism and the local mismanagement of that period.
