Summary/Abstract: The deportation of Wilhelm Filderman, the leader of Romanian Jewry, in 1943 remains a key moment in the context of the Holocaust in Romania. New information regarding the decision to deport Filderman to Transnistria emerges from revisiting original Romanian-language documents found in the archive of the Center for the Study of the History of Jews in Romania – Wilhelm Filderman (ACSIER-WF). Although some of these documents were published in a collection edited in 2000, many remain unknown. The same documents are summarized by Filderman in his memoirs, written in French (after his emigration in 1948), published in English translation (2004), and translated into Romanian (2016, 2017). File 407 from Fund III (Holocaust) of the ACSIER-WF appears to be the earliest version of the text and sheds new light on the 1943 documents, adding names and place references missing from the documents published in the second volume of Filderman’s memoirs. This paper argues that an accurate Romanian edition of Filderman’s memoirs requires a thourough consideration of the here-mentioned archive.
