Summary/Abstract: In the present study, we primarily focus on two travelogues by J. J. Svátek from the early 20th century — In the Land of the Pharaohs (V zemi faraonů, 1907) and In the Land of the Holy Cross (V zemi sv. Kříže, 1911). Our main objective is to describe the ways in which the travel writer constructs the alterity of the Orient’s inhabitants, or rather, how he builds and defines the Oriental space itself. All of this is then contrasted with the way Svátek depicts the pan-Slavic idea and attempts to promote patriotic narratives. Furthermore, we take note of how the writer tries to create a construction of the Orient as an intersection of three different worlds — the Arab, the European, and the “old”. We endeavour to demonstrate that these worlds have a relatively uncomplicated hierarchy in Svátek’s texts.
