Summary/Abstract: In the final period of the war, Russian troops continued to transit Romania towards Bulgaria. This transit was permitted by the military convention of 4 April 1877, but some of these troops remained in Romania. These movements and concentrations of forces were recorded by the Romanian newspapers in Iaşi, Galaţi, Giurgiu, all these cities being important for the transportation on the railways connecting Russia to Bulgaria. In the first days of February 1878 it was clear that around 12-15 divisions will concentrate in Romania. In Iaşi, a variable number of Russian forces remained until the second half of August. Giurgiu was occupied by the 11th Infantry Division on 26 March. In Galaţi several pieces of heavy artillery were brought from Giurgiu and Bucharest, besides the troops stationed there. These actions made it clear that the Russians intend to occupy its ally, Romania. The towns from southern Bessarabia were occupied after the end of March by forces coming from Russia and Dobrudja. The military convention forbade the stationing of the Russian troops in Bucharest, but they took several positions around the city. They were prepared for a possible occupation of the capital, as results from the order given by General Drenteln to the commander of the 11th Division, General Ehrnrooth. The withdrawal of the Russian forces began at the closing of the Berlin Peace Congress and lasted until the end of August.
