Summary/Abstract: The Crimean War (1853-1856) was an important conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance formed by the Ottoman Empire, France, Great Britain, and later the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war was primarily triggered by disputes over the protection of Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire and by Russia’s expansionist ambitions in the Black Sea region. A significant theatre of operations was represented by the Danubian Principalities, Moldavia and Wallachia, which were occupied by Russian troops in 1853 and later by Austrian forces. Although not direct participants in the conflict, the Romanian Principalities were deeply affected by military occupation, economic burdens, and political uncertainty. The Treaty of Paris (1856) ended the war and had crucial consequences for the region: it placed the Principalities under the collective guarantee of the Great Powers and weakened Russian influence. This new international status created favourable conditions for political reform and ultimately facilitated the Union of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859.
