Summary/Abstract: n this essay we develop inferentialism as a methodological orientation for architectural practice by staging a philosophical confrontation with the discipline’s inherited models of form-making. Beginning with Kempelen’s chess-playing Turk as an early diagram of distributed cognition, the argument moves through Simondon’s critique of hylomorphism, the imposition of form upon passive matter, to demonstrate why conventional design methods, including parametricism, fail to ac-count for the epistemic conditions introduced by artificial intelligence. Simondon’s concept of ontogenesis provides the theoretical scaffold: form crystallizes from within, the way a crystal precipitates in a saturated solution, structure and content emerging simultaneously from the primordial soup of data, energy, and potential. This framework dismantles the assumptions embedded in deterministic design paradigms and exposes how schemas imposed onto material suppress its own tendencies, its own metastability, and its own capacity for individuation. The residual hylomorphisms of contemporary computational design, including top-down constraint hierarchies and convergence toward predetermined formal objectives, reveal an inherited Rationalist commitment to optimization that inference renders obsolete. The argument culminates in the articulation of inferentialism: a mode of practice where form, agency, and knowledge emerge through probabilistic transductive processes distributed across human cognition, computational models, and material environments.
