Summary/Abstract: In the article, special attention is paid to the situation of women-mothers serving a prison sentence who take care of children staying with them in penitentiary units. It aims to show to what extent the institutional conditions and legal and organizational solutions of the penitentiary system are conducive (or not) to the realization of personalistic values, such as the dignity of the human person, subjectivity, responsibility or the development of family relationships. The aim of this article is to analyze the phenomenon of motherhood carried out in penitentiary isolation in the context of the assumptions of the personalistic axiology of rehabilitation. It is an analysis of opportunities (rehabilitation potential) in the context of barriers (deprivation) of motherhood behind bars. The qualitative research utilized individual, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The use of this technique made it possible to reconstruct the experiences of motherhood in penitentiary isolation, as well as to identify the opportunities and barriers perceived by the women surveyed in the prison environment. In addition, the following were also used: analysis of documents (e.g. legal regulations, rehabilitation intervention programs and institutional documentation concerning the functioning of wards for mothers with children) and observation of non-participating in the space of wards intended for mothers with children, which allowed to capture the institutional and organizational context of the functioning of these units.
